Summer 2020 Book Club
CID hosted a pilot session of the Collaborative Virtual Inequality Brownbag (COVIB20) on August 14, 2020, from 2pm-3.30pm. It featured an open book club-style discussion of two books:
- How to be an Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi
- How to be an Anti-Capitalist in the 21st Century by Erik Olin Wright
The goal was to help maintain an intellectual community during this public health crisis, to read work that envisions a better future during these testing times, and to critically relate sometimes separate strands of social scientific inquiry.
Both books are available through your local bookstores, including the Black Stone Bookstore, a Black-owned independent bookstore in Ypsilanti. Wright’s book is also available as a free online pdf and Kendi’s book can be read online through the UM library.
When and Where?
- The Zoom session will happen on August 14, 2020 from 2pm-3.30pm
- On August 10, registered participants will receive an email with
- zoom conference call details
- an invitation for voluntary contributions to a non-public discussion board during the days leading up to the event
How Does It Work?
- As the pilot session in this series, we will test out an open structure for this virtual 90-minute meeting. There will be a faculty and graduate student moderator to help structure the discussion where needed. Discussion topics will be informed by voluntary contributions to a protected online forum that opens at the start of the week of the event. Depending on the number of participants, break-out groups focused on particular topics/sections may be integrated.
Who Can Join?
- This event is open to anyone interested
